Everton turn their sights to star of Denmark’s U21 Euros campaign
There may still be two months until the January transfer window opens but that hasn’t stopped the rumour mill whirring into life, with Everton linked to Werder Bremen defender Jannik Vestergaard.
The Danish centre-back was a star for his nation as their U21 side went all the way to the semi-finals of the European Championships over the summer.
The 23-year-old played in every match at the tournament with De Rod-Hvide as they went the furthest they have done since 1992.
His performances have attracted the attention of a number of Premier League teams, according to FussballTransfers.com with Everton reportedly leading the way alongside Newcastle and Tottenham.
While he was a permanent fixture in the youth ranks for the Danish team, he has managed to break his way into the senior side, earning himself four caps.
Interest in acquiring his signature over the summer was high with a number of Premier League outfits being rebuffed.
He has forged himself a regular starting role at Werder Bremen in his second season at the club, starting nine of their 10 league matches, scoring one goal.
The player himself was quoted as saying that he wanted to stay at the Bundesliga outfit, but that could yet change.
Bremen find themselves struggling this term, sat in 14th position in the league.
Furthermore, the club may wish to cash in on their young talent, for whom they paid Hoffenheim just €2.5m a year ago.
The northern German side are currently struggling financially and may see the sale of Vestergaard, amongst other big name players, as the way to resolve the crisis.
A fee upwards of €10m may be required to prise the stopper from the German side’s hands, having showed so much potential of late, but it could be a risk that Roberto Martinez is willing to take.
