Dunfermline duo pull ahead in Ladbrokes League 1 goalscorer battle

Published:

While Ayr United continue to give Dunfermline a run for their money at the top of Ladbrokes League 1, one table the Pars are dominating is the goalscoring charts.

Dunfermline have netted 30 goals already this season, but a couple of defeats have allowed Ayr to hold top spot over the last few weeks.

Joe Cardle and Faissal El Bakhtaoui have between them claimed over half of the goals for Allan Johnstone’s team.

The pair have eight goals apiece, and both players are understandably enjoying the season.

Cardle’s eight strikes, in addition to a cup goal, means the 28-year-old has already broken his season-best goal return of eight.

Speaking after his latest strike in Saturday’s 3-0 win over Albion, Cardle said: “It is a fantastic personal achievement and I now want to get up into double figures. Once you get two or three, you smell it and you just want more.”

The goal moved him joint top of the goalscoring charts and Cardle is now 9/4 favourite to claim the top scorer award this season.

Team-mate El Bakhtaoui also netted in last weekend’s win and is 5/2 second favourite for the accolade.

The 22-year-old has another seven in cup competition and heading into the international break his stats read 15 goals from 14 appearances.

Not bad for a player who only started playing the game little more than three years ago.

Bakhtaoui could be the player to go with in this little battle against his team-mate, as with such little experience behind him, one can envisage the Frenchman getting plenty better yet.
