CSKA Moscow v Manchester United: Rooney to build on Everton goal

Published:

Manchester United bounced back from their Arsenal thrashing with an impressive 3-0 win over Everton last time out and the Red Devils look set to build on that Toffees victory with a Champions League win over CSKA Moscow this week.

United go into the game as 6/4 favourites, with CSKA priced at 19/10 and the draw available at 12/5, but with Wayne Rooney in a rich vein of form the Red Devils captain could hold the key to bigger returns.

Rooney’s goal to finish off Everton last weekend may have been his first Premier League goal on the road in 11 months but focussing on such statistics does not paint the full picture.

With England games and cup competitions taken into account, Wazza has now hit eight goals in his last 10 games – hardly the form of a struggling forward.

Furthermore, Rooney’s hat-trick against Club Brugge in qualification for the Champions League group stages shows that when the Old Trafford club travel in Europe their captain is still the man to rely on when it comes to goals.

With this in mind the 9/4 on Rooney to score at any time looks great value with three players – Anthony Martial (2/1), Seydou Doumbia and Ahmed Musa (both 21/10) – all offering shorter odds.

It is the First Golascorer market where Rooney could really reap savvy punters some rewards, though, with Ladbrokes’ Sharp Shooter offer meaning double odds on first goals inside the opening 25 minutes.*

Rooney can be backed at 6/1 to open the scoring, but if he does so inside the first 25 minutes against the Russians Ladbrokes will pay out at a whopping 12/1.

The generosity doesn’t end there, however, with Ladbrokes also boosting the odds on Rooney scoring at any time in a United win from 7/2 to 9/2.

They may not have played in quite the style that United fans have come to expect so far this season but the platform is there to build on last weekend’s impressive win and at these odds Rooney looks the man to back to get his side purring again.
