Ashley Chesters is Ladbrokes’ Master at Work for September

After helping Great Britain and Ireland regain the Walker Cup, the amateur version of the Ryder Cup, Shropshire golfer Ashley Chesters has been awarded the Ladbrokes’ Master at Work award for September.
The 26-year-old was continuing a season to remember at Royal Lytham and St Annes after finishing tied for 12th at the Open at St Andrews in July.
Speaking to Ladbrokes News, Chesters told of how he was proud to finish his career as an amateur on a high, saying:
“It was one thing for me to even get picked to be on the team. So once you are on the team, you want to go there, play there and win it.
“As well as that it was nice to finish off my amateur career in such a way before I turned professional.”
As an amateur the man linked to Hawkstone Park Golf Club dazzled the greens in Fife at golf’s oldest major, at one point having a putt to take a share of the lead in his final round.
Asked whether he thought that showing on the Old Course proved that he could cut it with the professionals the two-time European Amateur Champion said: “Yeah definitely, The Open was pretty much as good a field as you can get and I finished fairly high up, and considering I could have saved myself a few shots that I wasted I don’t think I was too far away.”
Going forward Chesters will be one of those professionals, teeing off for the biggest prizes in golf.
He will first have to earn a place on the European Tour, for which the next Q School event is held at the start of November in Spain.
He did however earn himself two invitations to Tour events in the past month, in the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship and the British Masters.
A missed cut in the former preceded a weekend spot at Woburn, in an event that Chesters was pleased to make his first cut in his pro career when finishing tied 46th.
“I played well the first two rounds but didn’t do quite so well in the second two. To make the cut and pick up some prize-money on the European Tour was nice, because it’s like starting from scratch again now.”
And having led his country to a victory over the USA on the amateur stage, there may be an obvious target in his life as a professional.
“I’m a long way off anything like it now, but I suppose the Ryder Cup would be the dream now. Having got as far as I did with the amateur stuff, hopefully I can do the same in the professional game.”
