Poll: Was Man Utd’s big money spend the best Deadline Day business?

The transfer window is closed, the clubs have done all the business they can, and all we can do now is reflect.

This summer’s Deadline Day may have felt like an anti-climax (Arsenal and Liverpool fans), but with plenty of signings going through supporters elsewhere will be scrutinising their team’s deals.

Here are our five candidates…

Aston Villa

Having conceded seven goals in their last three Tim Sherwood may have seen Deadline Day as the optimum time to bolster his defensive ranks.

The arrival of Joleon Lescott and Tiago Illori from West Brom and Liverpool respectively could certainly do just that. The former is a life-long Villans fan so will undoubtedly go the extra mile for his new employers.

Manchester United

It may have just been the one deadline day deal for the Red Devils in Anthony Martial but at £36m it will be a stern test of Louis van Gaal’s judgement.

The 19-year-old has netted just 11 times in two years, so comes with plenty of risk attached, but if he fulfils the potential the club obviously see in him, he could yet be money well spent.

Norwich

Two loanees made Deadline Day a decent one for the newly promoted Canaries.

While Lewis Grabban didn’t secure the move away that he had hoped for, another striker for competition in the shape of Dynamo Kiev’s Dieumerci Mbokani will add plenty of goals, having netted 19 in 46 for the Ukrainians. Fellow new arrival Matt Jarvis could be the man to provide the ammo for those strikes.

Watford

No Premier League team signed more players over the summer than the Hornets, and they were certainly busy right up until the last minute.

Adlene Guediora returned for another three years at Vicarage Road, while the arrival of two more international strikers in Victor Ibarbo and Obbi Oulare could fire them to the goals needed to stay up this year.

West Ham

Slaven Bilic’s men were the busiest on Deadline Day, bringing in four players. The Hammers went from struggling for personnel in key positions to having fantastic competition for places.

Nikica Jelavic could be a snip at £3m as a squad rotation player, while the return of Alex Song is a blessing for the Upton Park faithful. Throw in the addition of wingers Victor Moses and Michail Antonio and it looks a solid day for the Londoners.
