Norwich leaving it late with Everton and Palace enquiries

Published:

Norwich are looking to add some proven Premier League firepower to their ranks before the end of the summer transfer window, with two late moves for Crystal Palace and Everton strikers on Deadline Day.

The Toffees have already rejected a Canary bid of around £7m for Scotland international Steven Naismith, although Alex Neil may yet return to Merseyside to up that offer if his backup plan doesn’t work out.

That backup plan looks to be Crystal Palace’s Dwight Gayle, who has been available for transfer for most of the summer.

Bristol City had an offer for the Eagles livewire accepted earlier in the window, but were met by an unwillingness from the player to join their cause.

No doubt Gayle was holding out for a switch to another top-flight side and it remains to be seen whether Norwich match the 24-year-old’s ambition.

As it stands, Norwich have not signed a permanent striker since sealing promotion back to the Premier League, which is rare for a newly promoted side as they seek to find the goals that will keep them in the division.

Their only cavalry in the final third of the pitch arrived in the form of Democratic of Congo forward Dieumerci Mbokani, who signed for the Carrow Road club on loan from Dynamo Kiev on Deadline Day, and scored 16 goals in 33 games for the Ukraine outfit.
