Man United to hush noisy neighbours on European stage

Manchester United may trail neighbours Manchester City in the Premier League but the Red Devils will go further in Europe this year.
That is according to the latest poll by Ladbrokes News, which asked readers to vote on which half of Manchester would last longest in the Champions League, with the Old Trafford club the more popular answer – just.
More than half of the votes registered (53 per cent) were for Louis van Gaal’s side, who start their European campaign against PSV Eindhoven in Holland later tonight.
As well as the Dutch side, United will also face Russian giants CSKA Moscow and tricky German opponents in Wolfsburg.
City face an arguably tougher challenge with Italian giants Juventus, Europa League winners Sevilla and Bundesliga side Borussia Monchengladbach in Group D.
It is perhaps the strength of the group that the Citizens find themselves in that explains why a smaller proportion of Ladbrokes news readers are backing Manuel Pellegrini’s side to go on a deep run into the tournament.
Just 47 per cent of voters expect the Chilean to outperform Van Gaal in Europe this year, and with the Dutchman winning the Champions League before – with Ajax in 1995 – they might be onto something.
However, while our readers expect United to outlast their noisy neighbours, the betting suggests otherwise, with the Sky Blues priced at 11/1 to lift the cup in 2016 and the red half of the city given odds of 20/1.
