Ladbrokes Premiership Review: Aberdeen on the charge

There appears to be the real prospect of a genuine threat to Celtic’s dominance of the Scottish Premiership. Aberdeen made it a club record six successive league wins with an all action performance at Pittodrie, as supporters start to dream of a tilt at the title.

A stirring second half comeback from the home side gave them the victory they deserved, and the lead at the top of the table with a game in hand.

The Dons were trailing to a first half Leigh Griffiths penalty, and staring in the face a sixth consecutive defeat to the defending champions.

McInnes’ men seem to be made of sterner stuff this season, however, and an Adam Rooney penalty leveled up the scores at 1-1. Then despite the harsh red card awarded to winger Jonny Hayes, they continued to pile forward and got their reward with Paul Quinn’s dramatic winner. Celtic look to be missing the calming influence in defence, and they look more vulnerable than usual.

Elsewhere, new signing Kevin McHattie made an instant impression to the Killie support as he scored a stunning late winner against Dundee United at Tannadice. The 2-1 victory was Kilmarnock’s first of the season and eased the pressure on manager Gary Locke.

Opposition manager Jackie McNamara now faces increased calls for his head, the Terrors have lost four league games in-a-row and now sit second bottom of the table.

The only club below them are the hapless Partick Thistle. The Jags lost 1-0 at home to Dundee, as Greg Stewart neatly curled in the second half winner. Alan Archibald’s team have now drawn a blank in six of their seven matches, and now boast the unwanted record of the worst goal scoring in the country.

St Johnstone continue to slowly climb the table after a slow start. The Saints recorded an impressive 4-1 win over Hamilton at McDiarmid Park. The star of the show was Steven MacLean who banged in a clinical hat-trick, as the home side took their goals tally to 13, with only Celtic and hearts scoring more.

Ross County were denied victory, as a stoppage time Louis Moult goal earned Motherwell a share of the points, in a 1-1 draw at Fir Park. Michael Gardyne’s early strike looked to be sending the Staggies to a fourth straight win till the Englishman’s late intervention.

Finally, early season pace setters Hearts slumped to their second straight defeat, as they went down 2-0 to Inverness on Friday night. Caley recorded their first win thanks to strikes from James Vincent and debutant Miles Storey, but it was the performance of Celtic bound Ryan Christie that stole the show. A miserable day for the Jambos was compounded by the sending off of Nigerian defender Juwon Oshaniwa. To sum up a poor day for the away side, Spanish striker Juanma fluffed his lines, with one of their better chances, in hilarious fashion.
