Ladbrokes Premiership: Inverness the ones to halt Aberdeen’s run

Published:

With eight wins to their name from their opening eight Ladbrokes Premiership matches it looked as if Aberdeen had come to the fore in the battle for the title.

They may have been a much bigger price than a certain Glaswegian outfit, but they were top on merit with their 100 per cent record intact.

That was until Inverness Caledonian Thistle stood before them.

The Highland outfit had been inconsistent this team, winning just one game prior to last weekend’s fixture.

But two goals from Miles Storey and Ryan Christie put John Hughes’ side in front before Ashton Taylor bagged a consolation for the Dons, though that wasn’t enough to spark a revival.

The defeat wasn’t enough to strip them of top-spot but it means Derek McIness’ side are now 5/1 (from 4/1) for the title.

It should have handed Celtic the initiative, but the Bhoys themselves were unable to take advantage.

Held to a goalless draw against Hearts, Ronny Deila’s men were unable to capitalise and will also now be without Efe Ambrose for a few games after he was shown a straight red late on in the contest.

Nevertheless, with cracks in Aberdeen’s armour beginning to show the Hoops were clipped in to 1/10 (from 1/8) to retain their title.

At the other end of the table things went from bad to worse for Partick Thistle.

The league’s basement club remain without a win after succumbing 2-1 to a managerless Motherwell outfit.

An own goal from Frederic Frans and a Scott McDonald strike were enough to mean the Jags are now odds-on (4/6) to finish in the same position they currently hold.

Elsewhere there were wins for Hamilton Academical and St Johnstone, both by the same 2-1 scoreline.

The former came from behind to move up to fourth in the table with goals from Dougie Imrie and Ali Crawford bagging the spoils at Kilmarnock.

The Saints themselves overturned a one-goal deficit, fighting back with 10 men to defeat Dundee United at McDiarmid Park.

The only score-draw in the division came at Dens Park as Dundee shared the spoils with Ross County in a 3-3 thriller.

Liam Boyce’s opener saw him move on to six goals for the season and shorten to 12/1 to top the Premiership scoring charts at the end of the campaign.

It wasn’t enough to spark the Staggies onto victory though as Greg Stewart and Rory Loy ensured the hosts got a share of the spoils.
