History boys Japan pulled off ‘biggest ever sporting shock’

Published:

There have been countless shocks in sporting history but last weekend’s Rugby World Cup win for Japan against South Africa tops the lot, according to Ladbrokes News voters.

Japan’s rugby stars produced a stunning 34-32 victory over the Springboks to secure a first World Cup victory in 24 years for the Rising Sun nation and thus propel them to the top of our poll on 58 per cent.

It’s certainly an incredible feat and one that’s captured the imagination of a global audience as well as your good selves.

The exploits of the Greek national football team back in 2004 finished in second on 27 per cent while Buster Douglas’ epic world heavyweight boxing upset against ‘Iron’ Mike Tyson earned him a spot on  the podium.

That left Pastor Maldonado and the 1980 gold-medal winning USA ice hockey team fighting for scraps.

Maldonado’s against-the-odds Spanish Grand Prix win – he took the chequered flag at 500/1 – won that particular battle with the ‘Miracle on Ice’ failing to attract a single vote.

That’s despite the fact the Americans pulled off an incredible 4-3 victory to defeat the USSR and give their illustrious opponents a bloody nose having watched the Ruskies clean up in previous Winter Olympics.
