Greenock Morton motoring after a slow start

Greenock Morton fans have had to be a little patient so far this season, but things are starting to come good for the men from Cappielow Park.

Having secured the League One title and a return to the Ladbrokes Scottish Championship on the final day of last season, Morton fans could be forgiven for being a little anxious about what this campaign would bring.

Their final game in the Championship had ended in a humbling 10-2 loss away at Hamilton.

Now only Rangers, Falkirk and Hibernian boast better defensive records. How times have changed.

Home draws with Falkirk and St Mirren bookended a 1-0 loss away at Hibs. After three games Morton could claim just two points and one goal for their efforts, but notably just two goals conceded.

The Ton had negotiated their way past Elgin and Queen of the South in the League Cup, but as Morton headed to bottom side Alloa, Duffy expressed caution as they sought three points.

A Thomas O’Ware effort in the second half however was enough to separate a tight encounter and give Morton that first league success.

The monkey now off their back, Morton were gifted an opportunity away at Livingston this weekend when the hosts found themselves down to 10-men just half an hour in.

Greenock took full advantage to race into a 4-0 lead through four different goalscorers, and it could have been more before a couple of consolation efforts from the beleaguered hosts saw it finish 4-2.

Boss Duffy told the Daily Record: “The boys did great as it’s hard to play against 10 men.

“Livingston worked hard and were organised but we moved the ball quicker and as a result we created space and capitalised on our chances.”

That result marked a third straight away win in all competitions and the deadline day loan signing of youngster Alex Samuel from Swansea is already attracting attention on the terraces.

Despite suffering more injury woes than any other side in the Championship, the boys from Renfrewshire now sit a handy fourth in the table and could go second this weekend if results go their way.

Dumbarton are the visitors to PA15, but having lost their last three league games, won’t be too enticed at the prospect of facing this in-form side.

Queen of the South and Rangers face Morton in quick succession before September is out, but there’s plenty of reason for the Ton faithful to be quietly optimistic this year.
