Fitba Crazy Week Two – Ayr United

Published:

Welcome along to the second edition in our series of Fitba Crazy, a celebration of Scottish Fitba banter and a chance to test your tartan trivia. We aim to take you round the grounds, stopping off to chat with fans of all 42 clubs.

How much do supporters in Scotland really know about their clubs and the national team?

We’re going to find out as we get closer to the fans across all four divisions of the SPFL.

The star of the show this week is Colin Inglis who tells us about his beloved Ayr United. He is one of the top togs at SomersetRoadEnd. Despite living in Malaysia he still keeps on the ball with all the latest United gossip. He is a proud member of the Aberdeen Ayr United Supporters group, who have raised a fantastic £75,000+ shared between Alzheimers Scotland & Ayr United Academy in memory of club and Scotland legend Ally Macleod- well done folks!

He’s been sharing with us his passion for Ayr United and testing his knowledge of all things ‘fitba’…

– Describe your club in three words? The Honest Men

– Any pre-match superstitions? Never start drinking before 12; Quite often the rule is broken, which maybe explains some of our poor results over the last couple of seasons.

– Best and worst player you have witnessed in your club’s shirt? Best Player – A recent player would be Ryan Stevenson but maybe showing my age, but I going to pick Alain Horace. It was exciting when he was on the ball and could make things happen, sadly his playing career was cut short due to injury. Instead of picking a worst player (far too many) can I pick our worst Manager which has to be Simon Stainrod by a country mile. That was a very dark period during AUFC history and the I was one of the many that purchased Fedoras as we caught up with the emotion

– What is the funniest thing you have witnessed at a football match? Many moments could be described as you just had to be there, but Andy Walker’s penalty against Kilmarnock in the Scottish Cup was brilliant, just hilarious and always raises a smile when the video appears.

– Why is your club better than every other club? Because they just are OK. I would not say we are better than every other club and certainly at the moment, it would be fair to say AUFC are yet another sleeping giant compared to their history of being in the top league. The thing about supporting AUFC there is the potential to be a bigger club, we have just not found the right chemistry between chairman, manager & team but some day it will happen and Champions League here we come..

– What’s the single best thing about Scottish football? Most of the fans have a good sense of humour and don’t take everything too seriously. That’s certainly the case these days anyway.

– Best chant you’ve ever heard on the terraces? Bobby Williamson’s got a monkey’s or change to opposition manager…

– Which player from your division would you like in your team? Some Ayr United fans would like to see the return of Michael Moffat, but for scoring goals and current form I would be happy to see Rory McAllister from Peterhead sign for this championship winning season.

– Best away day and why? Oh, this is difficult as there have been many each with different merit that could be the “best” day; but I’m going to select Berwick Rangers championship winning weekend 96/97 season. We stayed in Newcastle that weekend, (Friday to Sunday) and if I remember Newcastle finished 2nd in the league and the entire place was just buzzing. We have had promotion since via play-off games but it will take something special to beat that weekend.

– Side you enjoy beating the most and why? Without any doubt Kilmarnock, local rivals and general satisfaction of being the only team in AYRshire. – Livingston are a close second with our history in the lower leagues.

– What’s the most memorable game you’ve been to? Take your pick from any of the Kilmarnock victories. But I will pick the League cup semi-final against Hibs; The game itself was not too memorable but the fact we had reached a national Cup final for the 1st time and general celebration, traveling back to Aberdeen passing all the Hibs buses on the road will remain in the memory for some time.

– Match Day Pie of choice – Scotch, Mince or Steak? Steak.
