Fans say Jose Mourinho on thin ice at Stamford Bridge

Jose Mourinho is fighting an uphill battle to keep his job after Chelsea’s worst start to a season in 29 years.

That is the suggestion of the latest Ladbrokes News poll, which showed that 56 per cent of the football fans that voted feel like the Special One’s position as Blues boss is under threat.

The question came after Steven Naismith became only the sixth person to score a Premier League hat-trick against Chelsea in Everton 3-1 win over the champions at Goodison Park on Saturday.

The defeat means Chelsea now sit in 17th place in the Premier League after five games with just four points.

As it stands, all three of the club’s promoted from the Championship last year sit above the reigning champions, with Bournemouth, Watford and Norwich either gaining more points or conceding fewer goals.

Chelsea’s sole win of the season came against West Brom and even then the Stamford Bridge outfit conceded two goals.

Mourinho tried his hardest to lure John Stones from Everton this summer and with his side conceding 12 goals in the opening five games – more than any other club in the league – the Portuguese manager has been fending questions about his ability to turn things around.

There is still a huge amount of support for Mourinho, of course, with 44 per cent of voters believing that his job is safe, but with Arsenal next up in the league the crescendo of noise surrounding his potential dismissal could soon grow louder still.

No team with just four points after five games has ever finished higher than third in the Premier League so if Mourinho is to remain he will have his work cut out to halt runaway leaders Manchester City.
