Euro Away Days: The quick-fire guide to picture perfect Porto

The Champions League makes a welcome return this week for the second round of games, and with Chelsea heading to FC Porto for their Group G clash in Portugal, we’ve put together a handy little quick-fire guide for the travelling Blues fans.

Chelsea supporters heading down to this city in the north of Portugal will find themselves landing in a balmy low-to-mid 20s sunshine with endless doses of culture, history, nightlife and some sublime sandwiches all to experience and enjoy.

Here’s how to make the most of a little midweek trip to this picturesque city…

Getting Around

We all want to cram in as much as possible on a short city break, and Porto is no exception so why not hire a Segway and cut the walking?

Organised city tours on Segways are the norm nowadays and with time a little tight before kick-off, these clever two-wheeled machines will make sure you see all that you need to see and still have plenty of time for a few pre-match beverages.

Museums

Don’t worry, we don’t mean museums of artists you’ve never heard of and paintings you’ll never understand, FC Porto boast one of the newest, biggest and most extensive club museums to be found in football.

Located under the east stand of the Estadio de Dragao, the museum is only two years old but boats a highly interactive timeline of all things Porto. We’re talking the club’s handball, basketball and even roller hockey teams (yes, really) in addition to an extensive history of the great Portuguese football club.

Food

All that Segway riding and museum touring will make a football fan hungry, and luckily Porto caters for every need.

An absolute must in this city is a Francesinha sandwich, a Portuguese dish which originated in Porto over 50 years ago.

There’s no wrong way to make this succulent sarnie, but essentially it involves ham, chipolata sausage, steak meat and cheese coated in a hot and thick tomato and beer sauce served on a bed of fries. Dribble.

Enjoy with an ice cold beer and you’ll quickly find yourself pondering why this isn’t a staple part of life at home.

Nightlife

Win or lose on Tuesday night, Porto has everything you need for a great night out.

Head along the Douro River in Gaia where you’ll find pubs, bars and discos aplenty.

From the 1980s to current dance – Europe loves a good dance track – all your music tastes will be catered for.

Liverpool, Spurs and Celtic fans may be hoping Porto drop into the Europa League later this season so they can head down to Estado Novo and check out their ‘Wild Wild Women’ night every Thursday…
