Day to crown flying form with FedEx Cup glory and hefty payday

As implausible a prospect as it may have seemed halfway through the PGA Tour season, 2015 may not actually belong to Texan upstart Jordan Spieth when all is said and done.
The 22-year-old took home both the Green Jacket and US Open as he waged a one-man war on the sport’s world order, part of four tournament wins he’s secured during the campaign.
However, after claiming second place in the PGA Championship, a jaded Spieth missed the cut in the first two tournaments in the FedEx Cup Playoffs. Last week he regained some semblance of form with a tied 13th finish at the BMW Championship.
In that time, Australian Jason Day has surged to the top of the world rankings on a wave of form comparable, if not better, than Spieth’s own purple patch.
In his past eight starts Day has finished no worse than T12 and has won four times, including a maiden major title at the PGA and two of the Playoffs’ first three tournaments.
Now with the series’ finale on the horizon, the chance to claim the PGA Tour’s FedEx Cup and the famous $10m prize looks Day’s for the taking.
Ladbrokes make him the 3/1 favourite, with Rory McIlroy – remember him? – at 6/1 and Spieth rounding off a tantalising single-figure triad at 8s.
All three, along with 10/1 pair Henrik Stenson and Rickie Fowler, form the top five of the FedEx Cup standings. Such a fact is important to note as all of the last three Tour Championship (and subsequent FEC) victors came from that bunch.
Unfortunately for the quartet not named Jason Day, there’s only one man worth wagering on in Atlanta.
Thankfully for the European Tour, the exclusivity of the Tour Championship – only 30 players who qualify for the event take part – the PGA Tour’s showpiece actually benefits their field for the Porsche European Open.
Hunter Mahan, Charl Schwartzel and Graeme McDowell will all be among the field for the tournament’s return after a six-year hiatus, with their prices ranging from 16/1 for the former pair to 40/1 to the Northern Irishman.
With consecutive finishes of fourth and third in his locker though, it’s Fabrizio Zanotti that gets our pick at 33/1.
The last time he claimed European Tour laurels came after he finished 5th and 14th in the previous two weeks, so here’s to finding another pot of gold at the end of his form rainbow.
