Manchester United were strongly linked with an audacious swoop for him in the summer, but after his electric start to Bayern Munich’s Champions League campaign, it’s obvious why the Germans never entertained letting Thomas Muller leave.
The World Cup winner was on target twice as Olympiacos were swatted aside 3-0 in Greece, leaving the Bundesliga champions in command of Group F.
Only Real Madrid’s usual suspect Cristiano Ronaldo now sits above Bayern’s brace grabber in the scoring charts and given Muller’s penchant for tournament goals, the German really could be a threat to the dominance of La Liga’s scoring titans.
Having fired seven times last season Muller ended the competition just three shy of joint winners Ronaldo, Neymar and Lionel Messi, as Pep Guardiola’s men were eliminated at the semi-final stage.
With Messi and Neymar failing to open their accounts on matchday one of the latest edition, Muller now looks a viable bet at x/x to claim the top scoring gong.
When Bayern won their fifth European Cup in 2012/13 Muller blasted his way to a total of eight and judging by the early evidence, two-time Champions League-winning coach Guardiola will be taking his side deep into proceedings again.
A Golden and Silver Ball winner from the past two World Cups, Muller seems to relish the tournament setting and being Bayern’s designated penalty taker only enhances his chances of regular netting.
Another hugely encouraging sign that Muller can reach a new height this season is the shake-up of Bayern’s frontline which seems to be bringing out the very best in him.
Muller has scored eight times in just six all-competition appearances playing alongside Douglas Costa and Robert Lewandowski as part of a Barcelona-esque fluid front three.
He also nabbed three more for Germany across two recent Euro 2016 qualifiers.
At this current scoring rate, the Weilhelm native is on course to smash his highest seasonal tally of 27 Bayern strikes from 2013/14.
