Capture of Hearts left-back is perfect timing for Kilmarnock

Published:

Kilmarnock sit bottom of the Ladbrokes Scottish Premiership table as the top-flight sits in recess for the international break, but the Rugby Park dwellers have received a welcome lift ahead of their next fixture.

Having mustered just two points from a possible 18 thus far and harbouring a goal difference 11 in arrears, it’s fair to say Gary Locke’s side have begun their campaign poorly.

However, if a propensity to concede goals has been a root cause, then the timing of a new and highly-promising defender couldn’t have been timed much better.

With the transfer window running down, Killie fans were left wondering whether the club could pull anything out of the bag to help remedy the situation and they could, just in the nick of time.

The signing of 22-year-old Hearts left-back Kevin McHattie will be hugely welcome at Rugby Park, given the defensive woes experienced early in 2015/16.

Kilmarnock did show signs of improvement when going down by just a single goal to Motherwell last time out in the league, and even then it was a penalty.

McHattie was courted by several big clubs having turned out for the Jam Tarts over 70 times over an impressive fledgling career to date.

That Tynecastle education also saw the young defender represent Scotland at both U17 and more recently U21 level.

Locke said “I am pleased to have secured Kevin for Kilmarnock. He is a very talented young left-back and we had to fight off competition from some really big clubs to sign him.”

The East Ayrshire side are next in action away at Dundee United, who’ve also stuttered out the blocks with just four points and Kilmarnock will be citing a first league win of the campaign priced up at 29/10 with Ladbrokes.

McHattie could well make his Killie debut at Tannadice.
