Aston Villa ramp up defender hunt with Reds outsider

Published:

Aston Villa have been extremely busy bringing in players over the course of the summer and are showing no signs of slowing their recruitment drive of transfer deadline day.

It seems central defence is Tim Sherwood’s priority in the final 24 hours of silly season, with a deal for West Brom’s Joleon Lescott reportedly being pursued and now news of an enquiry into the availability of rarely-seen Liverpool man Tiago Ilori.

The Reds are likely to repond positively to that enquiry, considering they have shipped the Portuguese youngster out on loan in the past two season.

Despite spending time with Granada and Bordeaux, Ilori hasn’t seemingly developed enough to be able to gain a first team spot in Brendan Rodgers’ bumbling defence.

Dejan Lovren continues to be uninspiring at the heart of that backline, yet Ilori still sits on the sidelines, it therefore makes a deal to Villa a real possibility.

Sunderland are also reportedly keen to swoop for the former Sporting Lisbon star, having already rescued Uruguayan centre-back Sebastian Coates from the Liverpool doldrums this summer.

Whether Villa look to loan the Ilori or pursue a permanent deal for him remains to be seen and may rest on the success of Lescott’s move, which is rumoured to have moved past the medical phase.

Aston Villa travel to Leicester in their first assignment after the closing of the window, with Ladbrokes making them 16/5 outsiders to win.
