Stones should stay put at Everton, according to poll

The chance to play for the Premier League champions, compete at the highest level in Europe and increase the likelihood of playing for your country is difficult for any footballer to turn down but that’s the advice being given to John Stones.

Ladbrokes News voters have once again turned out in force to have their say on one of the summer’s biggest transfer sagas with 71 per cent of the opinion that moving to Chelsea would not be in the best interests of the coveted defender.

The Blues’ defensive stability – or lack thereof –  has been called into question following an opening day draw against Swansea, a heavy defeat to title rivals Manchester City and a narrow 3-2 victory over West Brom last weekend.

‘Captain, leader, legend’ John Terry was sent off in the latter match and even his place in Jose Mourinho’s side is under threat as Chelsea continue to pursue a deal for Stones.

The former Barnsley man is the most sought-after defender in England but even after three bids and a transfer request his future remains unresolved.

Back in February Roberto Martinez told the Liverpool Echo: “To see John, at such a young age, performing with that calmness and with that know-how at his age makes him one of the best ball playing centre-halves you will see in European football.”

He’s obviously an asset that the Merseysiders aren’t prepared to hand over lightly and the majority of you are siding with the Goodison Park outfit.
