Is season opener a Man United audition for Harry Kane?

Published:

Manchester United’s pursuit of Tottenham striker Harry Kane has existed only on the back pages of the country’s newspapers so far.

The 31-goal England ace had a season that will go down in Premier League history last year and with United losing Robin van Persie, Radamel Falcao and potentially Javier Hernandez the link between Kane and Old Trafford is an obvious one to make.

At present, with Chicharito injured, Wayne Rooney and James Wilson are the only recognised strikers in the Old Trafford ranks and an injury to the England captain would potentially leave Louis van Gaal’s title ambitions in tatters.

Memphis Depay may have bagged 20+ goals in Holland last year but the winger cannot be expected to reach such heights during his first foray into the English game.

United have been quiet, nay silent, about Kane so far and while the papers are always full of speculation there is rarely smoke without fire.

Could it be that United and Tottenham have already agreed for the 22-year-old to make the same journey as Teddy Sheringham, Dimitar Berbatrov, Michael Carrick?

Spurs are obviously reluctant to lose their biggest asset but the Lilywhites’ opener being at Old Trafford could mean the lack of a deal is more a delay than a complete rebuff.

With the transfer window open until the end of the month there is plenty of time for Kane to prove he’s not a one season wonder and as such plenty of opportunity for Spurs to stick to their reported guns about a rumoured £40m fee.

As such, while Kane will be gunning to dent United’s title hopes in the early kick-off this weekend, the encounter could actually serve as a final audition for the forward to prove to Van Gaal, and the United board, that he’d be worth every penny.
