Premier League Countdown: Spurs bumped for lofty finish

Published:

Tottenham haven’t made the top four since the golden era of Harry Redknapp, remember him? And Ladbrokes are boosting the north London outfit to get close but ultimately end up minus the cigar once again.

The bookmaker makes it 5/1 that Spurs finish fifth this term, something that has happened in three of the last five seasons at White Hart Lane. In fact, half of the last 10 seasons have seen the Lilywhites settle just outside the top four after 38 games.

It’s mainly been a summer of clearing out the deadwood so far, with the likes of Vlad Chriches, Paulinho, Benjamin Stambouli, Etienne Capoue and Younes Kaboul shown the exit door.

Major additions Toby Alderweireld and Kieran Trippier only make the squad stronger and with a fifth place finish in 2014-15 there is no reason that cannot be repeated. Their main rivals Liverpool have made wholesale changes while it will be a big ask of Southampton to once again repeat their heroics.

Breaking the top four looks an arduous task. Chelsea, Man City and Arsenal look destined to battle it out for the title, while Man United have added well this summer and despite being a striker short of a full set Red Devils fans will be expecting a title charge.

Fifth is a position that has suited Tottenham in recent years and they look well set to find themselves there or thereabouts once again.

Ladbrokes have also gone 5/1 on Pochettino’s side beating both Arsenal and Chelsea at least once in the Premier League.

Spurs have registered at least one victory against bitter rivals the Gunners in five of the last six seasons and seriously outclassed the Pensioners in a 5-3 romp in the previous campaign.
