Poll Result: Reece Oxford pick of the bunch on opening weekend

Published:

West Ham’s teen sensation Reece Oxford is probably still pinching himself after a fairy tale debut for the Irons but the 16-year-old will be buzzing even more – or maybe not- after winning today’s Ladbrokes News poll.

After a string of stellar displays on the opening weekend of the Premier League campaign we asked you to vote of the standout performer and with a whopping 53 per cent of the votes Oxford was the clear winner.

The promising defensive midfielder recorded the highest pass completion rate on the pitch at 95 per cent as he put in an assured performance that saw Arsenal’s £42m man Mesut Ozil kept in his back pocket en route to a 2-0 win over the Gunners.

New Manchester United right-back Matteo Darmian was the best of the rest and after making do with Rafael or the makeshift Antonio Valencia in the right-back slot in recent years the Old Trafford faithful responded to the Italian’s solid showing by nominating the 25-year-old as Man of the Match for the Red Devils 1-0 win over Tottenham.

Not quite as many of our readers agreed, however, with the former Torino man securing 19 per cent of the vote.

Completing the top three was Liverpool Samba star Philippe Coutinho. The Brazilian may have shown a touch of Copa America tiredness in his display but he put it to one side to fire a wonderstirke for the Reds to secure a last-gasp 1-0 win over Stoke and take 15 per cent of the votes in our poll.

Next up with nine per cent was Swansea’s Jefferson Montero. The Ecuadorian did something that most attacking payers struggle to do when giving Chelsea’ Branislav Ivanovic the runaround in the Swans 2-2 draw with the Champions.

And bringing up the rear despite a fine first competitive performance for Crystal palace was Yohan Cabaye. The Frenchman rounded off a quality display with the Eagles’ third goal in the 3-1 win against Norwich but could only gain four per cent of today’s votes.
