Poll: Has Chelsea doc Eva Carneiro been harshly treated by Jose?
As a member of a Premier League club’s medical team, you probably don’t expect to find yourself demoted to backroom duties for simply treating a player.
But that is what looks to have happened to Chelsea’s Eva Carneiro this week.
With the Blues being held to a 2-2 draw by Swansea on Saturday, Eden Hazard stayed down after a strong challenge from Gylfi Sigurdsson.
Doing as many physios would do in such a situation, Carneiro rushed onto the pitch to treat the stricken Belgian, much to the outrage of Jose Mourinho.
The reason for this? With Hazard receiving treatment, it meant that he would have to leave the field, leaving the home side temporarily down to nine men, following Thibaut Courtois’ dismissal.
Rather than take it out on his star man, whom Mourinho believed to actually be unhurt, the long-standing club doctor bore the brunt of his tirade.
“I was unhappy with my medical staff. They were impulsive and naive”, he said.
“Whether you are a kit man, a doctor or secretary on the bench you have to understand the game”.
“I was sure he hadn’t a serious problem. He had a knock, he was very tired. But my medical department – on an impulse – was naive and left me with eight outfield players in a counter-attack after a set piece”.
The fallout from the incident is that Carneiro will no longer be in attendance at the champions’ fixtures for the foreseeable future, and will be limited to work behind the scenes at the club.
The Stamford Bridge outfit have alluded that changes were afoot even before the weekend’s events, but there will always be suspicion that the medical team are being made scapegoats by the Portuguese gaffer.
Tell us what you think. Were Carneiro’s actions naive and her apparent punishment justified? Or has she been harshly done by the club she has worked for for six years?
