US Open: How the Rogers Cup could affect 2015’s final major

With preparations for the final major of the season now gathering pace the odds for the US Open are now taking shape.
Andy Murray claimed his third Rogers Cup title in seven years after defeating Novak Djokovic yesterday and the Brit can now be backed at 3/1 to reclaim the US Open title he broke his majors duck with in 2012.
Djokovic was a little out of sorts in Montreal but after complaining of suffering the effects of some suspect-smelling smoke in the crowd he can be expected to back down to earth and firing on all cylinders come the start of proceedings at Flushing Meadows.
While the win for Murray marked his first competitive victory over the Serbian since the 2013 Wimbledon final it was events elsewhere in the tournament that made the headlines.
Australian “bad boy” Nick Kyrgios was fined £6,400 after telling Stan Wawrinka that fellow Aussie Thanasi Kokkinakis had been amorous with the Swiss star’s girlfriend.
Kyrgios continues to bring attention to the world of tennis but while there are still some who see him in the same mould as snooker’s Ronny O’Sullivan, the 20-year-old’s bratty behaviour is already wearing thin with the masses.
Part of the reason for this is while he has an abundance of talent he is yet to turn that into dominating performances on the court. This is evidenced by his pricing as an 80/1 outsider to take the US crown. Those odds will need to crash immensely before he is afforded more freedom to have regular outbursts.
Wawrinka eventually retired from their match with an injury, but should he recover in time the 12/1 about the Swiss winning a third career major could offer plenty of value.
Elsewhere, on the women’s side of the Rogers Cup, Serena Williams showed potential signs of weakness after crashing out to 18-year-old Belinda Bencic in the semi-finals.
Williams remains the even-money jolly for the US Open, but after becoming the youngest person to beat the American in a competitive match since Maria Sharapova in 2004, the Swiss miss could attract some attention at odds of 20/1
