Liverpool defender eyed up by Premier League plunderers Roma

Roma have shown a remarkable lust for Premier League imports this summer, albeit all three players have arrived on loan for now, but according to reports the Serie A side may not be finished raiding British shores yet.

Chelsea, Arsenal and Manchester City have all seen players join the Giallorossi during the off-season, in the shape of Wojciech Szczesny, Mohamed Salah and latterly Edin Dzeko.

But with plenty of time still remaining in the transfer window it’s now emerged that Roma boss Rudi Garcia could make a move for Liverpool defender Mamadou Sakho.

According to the Daily Express, communication lines between the two clubs have been opened up.

Armed with the £20m apparently recouped from selling centre-half Alessio Romagnoli to AC Milan, the Italian club have identified Sakho as his chief replacement.

Speculation has been fuelled by the French international failing to be included in Liverpool’s opening-day squad at Stoke, despite being heavily involved during pre-season.

The reason for his omission is as yet unclear, though having thrown £18m at the left-sided centre-half only two summers ago, the Reds would expect a sizable fee.

At 25, Sakho still has his peak years ahead of him and without having a natural replacement for the French World Cup star in their ranks, it could be seen as a rash move for Brendan Rodgers to let him leave.

That isn’t to say the defender hasn’t endured some criticism since arriving at Anfield, where fans may well have expected the former Paris Saint-Germain skipper to make more than 36 Premier League appearances by now.

With a Europa League campaign to come, logic dictates that Rodgers would have to think about lining up a replacement before agreeing to any transfer.
