Ladbrokes League 2: Elgin slashed for title tilt after solid start

Published:

The odds on Elgin City lifting the Ladbrokes League 2 crown come the end of the season have been slashed after the Black and Whites’ electrifying start to the new campaign.

Jim Weir’s side were chalked up as distant 20/1 outsiders before a ball had been kicked but after back-to-back wins to start the 2015-16 campaign those odds have been slashed to 8/1.

The Borough Briggs side were thumped 5-0 by Ladbrokes Championship outfit Morton in the League Cup but the scoreline of that match did little to dampen the spirits of Weir’s men who put on a masterclass of their own away to Arbroath on the opening day of the season.

That 3-0 win, inspired by a brace from Craig Gunn, proved only a sign for things to come as City went one better last weekend by treating their own fans to a 4-0 win over East Stirling.

Gunn was again on the scoresheet and the former Ross County man now has 90 goals for the side he joined in 2009 and will be hoping to get closer to his century in this weekend’s visit to East Fife.

The Fifers bounced back from a 1-0 defeat on the opening day to record a comprehensive 5-0 win of their own against Berwick Rangers and with both sides now in goal-scoring mode the meeting at Bayview promises to be a thriller.

Gary Naismith’s men have looked fairly comfortable in recent meetings with Elgin, winning both games last season and scoring eight goals in the process.

However, Elgin rarely struggle for goals themselves against the Methil side, netting 11 in the last five clashes themselves.

A win for the visitors this weekend, against the side that reached the play-offs last year, would certainly signal the intent of Weir’s men and given their free-scoring form will certainly tempt at odds of 37/20.

Record a third straight victory though and the 8/1 about a title tilt could soon disappear, even at this early stage of the season.
