Chelsea and City still intent on signing superstars in final week

Published:

Silly season just became ‘ridiculous season’ according to some media sources as the Premier League’s leading lights are all linked with massive money deals with barely a week remaining in the summer transfer window.

Before moving onto some more feasible, if slightly fanciful rumours in some cases, it’s worth taking a moment to chortle at the Sun’s report that Manchester United have been in “secret talks” to sign Neymar from Barcelona.

Barring the Brazilian making some kind of off-field faux pas of epic proportions, it would be utter lunacy for the European champions to sell the heir to Lionel Messi’s Camp Nou crown.

However, the Mirror’s report that £50m will soon wrap up a deal for Wolfsburg midfielder Kevin de Bruyne sounds more within the realm of possibility.

The Bundesliga club are understandably reluctant to see their star man of last season desert their plans for a concerted title challenge, but having purchased the Belgian for £17.5m from Chelsea, this kind of mark up may be too good to ignore.

City’s pockets are famously deep, so it looks as if the new 11/10 title favourites may just bully their way to another marquee signing before the transfer window is out.

Meanwhile, staying with the theme of Premier League rejects, who’ve since gone to earn world-beating status elsewhere, Paul Pogba’s name has not been out of the headlines this summer.

The Frenchman, who has been linked with most top clubs in Europe, is now reported to be on his way to Stamford Bridge, according to the Sun, who claims a colossal cash + players deal with Juventus has been agreed.

The paper say that Chelsea will cough up £69m and send South American trio Oscar, Willian and Juan Cuadrado in the opposite direction.

It remains to be seen where reality meets fiction but this would be a move of unprecedented proportions should it ring true.
