Begged-to-stay Sunderland boss now favourite for fastest exit

Published:

Remember the affable Dutchman that kept Sunderland up in 2014/15 and then earned yet more Wearside affection by answering the call to return rather than retire? Well Dick Advocaat is now the strong favourite among his Premier League peers to be next out the door.

Mrs Advocaat could be booking up that cruise round the Norwegian fjords after all, according to the latest betting from Ladbrokes anyway.

The Sunderland manager is the evens favourite to be the next top-flight manager to leave, following on from summer casualties Sam Allardyce, Nigel Pearson and John Carver of last season’s cohort.

Advocaat’s new-look Black Cats could probably have been excused a 4-2 opening-day defeat at a vibrant Leicester.

But so abject was Sunderland’s display when losing 3-1 at home to promoted Norwich that some fans headed for the Stadium of Light exits following the second Canaries goal after 37 minutes.

Meanwhile, Allardyce’s replacement at West Ham, Salven Bilic, took the well-trodden management path from hero to zero, having orchestrated a wondrous win at Arsenal before falling victim to Claudio Ranieri’s Foxes at the Boleyn Ground a week later.

Perhaps more than a little harshly, the Croatian’s own odds of 11/1 place his head far nearer than it should be to the chopping block.

The precarious perch that has become Watford’s hotseat sees recently installed Hornets gaffer ‘Quique’ Sanchez Flores appear alongside a quintet of other candidates at 12s, despite achieving draws in the first two games.

A perfect start, results-wise at least, has seemingly brought pre-season favourite Brendan Rodgers some breathing space, now off the same mark as Flores.

The shock mover in the opposite direction is Jose Mourinho, after a tumultuous beginning to the season on and off the pitch for the firebrand Portuguese boss.
