White will keep MvG honest in World Matchplay Darts last eight

PDC and Premier League darts champion Gary Anderson won’t be bringing up the Triple Crown at the World Matchplay, after Austrian journeyman Mensur Suljovic followed up his first-round defeat of Terry Jenkins by taking an even bigger scalp.
Suljovic heads for a quarter-final showdown with James Wade, who the 43-year-old has beaten three times in his past five attempts including earlier this month in Wigan, yet Ladbrokes see him as quite the outsider at 7/2.
Before that battle, a couple of other semi-final spots have to be filled. Here’s our latest darts double, which will pay out at almost 5/2 if successful.
Ian White (+7.5) to beat Michael van Gerwen @ 8/11
MvG may have an imperious record against his Potteries opponent, winning their last six clashes and stuffing White 13-4 at the last-16 stage of this tournament 12 months ago, but the previous five matches between this pair saw them split by just two legs.
After the 44-year-old took the last seven legs to come back from 9-6 down to beat Simon Whitlock 13-9 in the previous round, expect him to have his eye in and keep Van Gerwen honest.
Peter Wright (-4.5) to beat Gerwyn Price @ 1/1
Former professional rugby union hooker Price sprang a last-16 shock to rival Anderson’s exit in beating No. 4 seed Adrian Lewis 13-10, having been 12-7 up on the two-time PDC world champion.
These two have only met once before on the circuit, but that was a mere seven months ago, when Wright whitewashed the Welshman at Alexandra Palace en route to a quarter-final exit against eventual PDC champ Anderson.
Price may be improving at a rate of knots (the 30-year-old was making his world championship debut in that match), but after ‘Snakebite’ cleared this mark against both Kim Huybrechts and Andrew Gilding in the first two rounds, he must be good value to do so again against a lower-ranked opponent.
