Spurs switch sights from Bolasie to Manchester Utd speedster

Having been quoted a whopping £25m for Crystal Palace winger Yannick Bolasie, according to the Daily Mirror, Tottenham have switched their sights to long-time target Ashley Young, who once again seems surplus to requirements at Manchester United.

With the Eagles’ Congolese international thought to be keen on a switch from south to north London, this rumour may run for a little while yet, but the red-top believe Lilywhites chief Mauricio Pochettino’s attention has turned to cheaper alternative Young.

It’s an open secret that Spurs want fresh legs out wide, with Andros Townsend, Erik Lamela and Aaron Lennon all out of favour since the Argentine coach took over at White Hart Lane.

The likes of Yannick Ferreira Carrasco, Memphis Depay and Jay Rodriguez have all slipped through the net after being touted for Spurs moves, while West Brom’s Saido Berahino, a striker with the requisite pace to play at wide-forward, has also been linked with a switch to the capital.

Now Young has re-emerged on the Lilywhites’ radar, after revealing earlier this month that United have yet to offer him a new deal.

The 30-year-old saw off the challenge to his first-team place from last summer’s £60m signing Angel Di Maria, who is widely expected to head for Paris Saint-Germain before the transfer window closes in September, but another expensive capture might have put an end to the former Aston Villa and Watford man’s Old Trafford tenure.

Memphis Depay, the 21-year-old Dutch international signed from PSV for £31m at the start of May, will expect to line up either at left wide-forward or alongside captain Wayne Rooney in a 3-5-2 formation, which boss Louis van Gaal utilised to stunning effect in Holland’s run to the semi-finals of the last World Cup.

With Depay in tow, the ‘Iron Tulip’ is likely to go with said strategy more often this term, but it’s tough to see any room for Young in United’s best XI.
