Spurs find yet another under-25 striker to be linked with

Published:

If it hadn’t been picked up on yet, with links to Danny Ings, Michy Batshuayi, Timo Werner and Anthony Martial flooding gossip pages for the past month or more, Spurs are in the market for a striker younger than 25.

Although they know the type of player they want, settling on the final product is proving difficult for the north Londoners.

Along with the aforementioned quartet, Mauricio Pochettino has also trailed Yannick Carrasco but has seen the former Monaco man move to Atletico Madrid over the summer.

Now, another new name is being aligned with a White Hart Lane switch.

21-year-old Lyon striker Clinton N’Jie has been, according to the Daily Star, the subject of a £7m bid from the Lilywhites, although a lack of wider reporting on the offer means the paper are perhaps jumping the gun.

The Metro have covered the story, suggesting Spurs are about to bid for the player they claim is the African Ronaldo. A goals record of eight in 36 for Lyon’s first-team is hardly the strongest semblance to the Portuguese goal getter, but Pochettino is suitably impressed nonetheless.

Admittedly, N’Jie’s record for Cameroon is far more prolific. He netted on his international debut against DR Congo in the African Cup of Nations qualifiers and has gone on to score six times in 11 caps all told.

Able to play through the middle or on either side of a forward line, the Buea native certainly fits the bill as the kind of player Pochettino wants to bring in to support Harry Kane, it just remains to be seen whether a deal can actually be struck.

Spurs are undergoing a heavy cleansing of their playing squad, having sold Paulinho, Etienne Capoue, Younes Kaboul, Benjamin Stambouli and Lewis Holtby so far this off-season.

Ahead of their opening-day battle against Manchester United, Pochettino’s squad are rated as 13/2 chances to finish in the top four by Ladbrokes.
