Premier League countdown: Sherwood can bag this Villa boost

Goals, goals and more goals. That is what Aston Villa fans can expect if Ladbrokes’ latest Premier League countdown boost is to deliver.

The bookmakers are marking the ever-approaching start to the Premier League season with a special price enhancement everyday in relation to each side in the division.

And this time it’s the Villans’ turn, with a whopping 17/1 on offer that every one of their 38 top-flight games this season features at least one goal.

The sale of Christian Benteke means they have plenty of cash to spend on reinforcements up front, while the departure of Ron Vlaar in defence could leave them even more open to attack.

Four games involving the West Midlands side ended up goalless in the season just gone, but that was before they uncovered a secret weapon, one Tim Sherwood.

At the Villa helm for 16 matches, he has yet to oversee a 0-0 draw, although unfortunately for them, more often than not it was their opponents that ensured the neutrals saw a goal.

During his time at Spurs, in between his spells of saluting Emanuel Adebayor, Sherwood oversaw 28 consecutive matches that featured a goal, and is yet to oversee a goalless stalemate in his 35 games in charge of a Premier League club.

His avoidance of shut-outs goes back even to his time as a player. Of his last 60 matches on the pitch only two failed to see the ball hit the back of the net.

So with these two 0-0s the only ones in the last 103 matches he has been involved in in some way, Sherwood is the man to rely on when it comes to delivering this bet.

While those two occurrences came during his time as a player, as a gaffer he is undoubtedly favourable to a more attacking approach.

The all-out nature of his sides can often leave them open at the back, demonstrated by the fact that 19 of the 44 matches he has overseen as a manager (43 per cent) have featured four or more goals.

It’s very unclear as to what sort of season Villa are in for in terms of league position, but with Sherwood at the helm we can be pretty sure there will be plenty of goals along the way.
