Poll result: Voters right to back Joe Root for Ashes Runs

Published:

England batsman Joe Root looks set to replay the faith Ladbrokes News voters have shown in him by smashing a first Test ton against the Aussies.

To mark the opening day of the Ashes we asked you who was going to score the most in the Cardiff test and with 60 per cent of the votes the Yorkshire man was the clear winner.

There’s plenty of cricket left to play before we can say with any certainty but at 107 not out (at time of writing) Root has put himself into a great position to deliver.

Next in the voting with 20 per cent of the overall vote was Aussie threat Michael Clarke.

Having gone for a duck in the first Test last time he played in England Clarke will be going all out to reach three figures and after outperforming everyone England had to offer 18 months ago he looks a safe bet to lead the charge from Down Under.

Completing the top three is Clarke’s Aussie team-mate Steve Smith. At 3/1 Smith is among the favourite to top score in Cardiff and after outperforming his teammates in the opening innings of two of their five tests last year Smith could pose a major threat.

However, with just 10 per cent of the votes it’s clear our readers expect runs to come from elsewhere.

And bringing up the rear, with five per cent apiece are England captain Alastair Cook and Australia’s Joe Root nemesis David Warner.

England fans were right to doubt their leader, with Cook heading back to the Pavilion after notching up just 20 runs before Gary Ballance and Root brought some steel to the hosts.

Warner, however, could still come back to haunt those with little faith. After smashing a total of 523 runs when the sides last met in Australia, he will certainly be one to watch when the visitors enter the crease.
