Poll Reaction: Gyan named as football’s biggest sell-out

Asamoah Gyan has been labelled football’s biggest mercenary after the second move on his career that could be attributed to cash over ambition.
After learning of the former Sunderland man’s switch from Al Ain to Chinese top flight outfit Shanghai SIPG – for a rumoured £227,000 per week – we asked you to vote for the game’s biggest mercenaries and with 68 per cent of the votes the Ghana ace was the clear winner.
With a hugely impressive goal ratio wherever he has been there are plenty of people who think Gyan turned his back on the potential to win top honours when heading to the Middle East in his mid-twenties.
This move has done little to dispel that opinion and means even Emmanuel Adebayor came a distant second.
However, with just 15 per cent of the votes it seems he and Gyan are on different planets.
Completing the top three was Chelsea flop Winston Bogarde. The Dutchman played just four times in four years at Stamford Bridge but refused to leave even when forced to train and play for the reserves.
However, after pocketing around £8m in wages during his time in west London Bogarde refused to apologise, saying: “when you are offered those millions you take them”
This honesty may have just saved him, as the former Ajax and AC Milan man took just seven per cent of the overall vote.
And tying for last place with just five per cent of the votes each are Christopher Samba and Luis Figo.
The latter’s switch from Barcelona to Real Madrid may have been controversial but one could argue there were motives other than money, and as for Samba it appears that no one really cares either way!
