PGA Championship venue means Johnson may not be done with 2015

If 2015 Open Champion Zach Johnson needed any inspiration that his second Major trophy needn’t be his last crowning glory in golf, he need only look to another American in history.

Julius Boros left it four years further apart than the seven between Johnson’s two Major triumphs and still went on to claim a third before he was done playing professionally.

The Connecticut native won the 1952 and 1963 US Opens and then added the PGA Championship to his collection five years later in 1968.

Meanwhile, Johnson will be hoping he can sew another one of golf’s flagship trophies up in less time than it took him to string his 2007 Masters and 2015 Open victories together.

That opportunity could present itself sooner rather than later as well. The final Major of the season is not far away and the venue choice for the 2015 PGA Championship could be the key factor in successive glorious tilts for the Iowa native.

Johnson’s chance to win at Whistling Straits is pitched at the 40/1 mark, but the course nestled into the side of Lake Michigan very nearly bore fruit the last time the Claret Jug winner played it in competition – making this a chunky-looking price.

In 2010, Johnson came within a shot of joining Bubba Watson and eventual winner Martin Kaymer in a play-off to record his best finish at a PGA Championship of third.

It seems this 2015 homage to links golf, which begun with the US Open being held at Chambers Bay for the first time, is a theme continued by The Straits course which replicates the challenge of Britain’s ancient seaside links courses.

Johnson clearly relishes the challenge to decision making that links courses present, as his expertly-plotted triumph at the original links test of St Andrews attests.

The popular PGA Tour player must be worth a few pennies on this evidence.
