Man Utd’s proposed signing delivers rivals title message

Manchester United are stepping up their efforts in the transfer window with the BBC reporting the Red Devils to be on the cusp of bringing a World Cup winner to Old Trafford.

That man is Bayern Munich and Germany midfielder Bastian Schweinsteiger who is opting to join up with his former manager Louis van Gaal, rather than extend his stay at the club he’s represented for over a decade.

The German has stockpiled a vast collection of silverware from his time at Bayern, including eight Bundesliga medals.

One of those league titles was achieved under Van Gaal’s stewardship in 2009/10 and now the Dutchman will be hoping Schweinsteiger can bring the winning mentality with him to England.

Attracting a player of his calibre is sure to signal a message of intent to their Premier League rivals that the Red Devils will be serious challengers again in 2015/16.

United are currently fourth favourites to win the title, at 11/2, though after a period of relative quiet on the transfer front a mini flurry of acquisitions will raise expectations at Old Trafford.

Schweinsteiger’s move will follow hot on the heels of right-back Matteo Darmian’s capture from Torino.

The Italy international right-back shot to the fore at last summer’s World Cup, drawing praise for his performances and coming to the attention of Europe’s top clubs.

Given that the right-back slot was a genuine problem position for LVG last season, occupied for large parts by winger Antonio Valencia, Darmian’s capture is another important step towards improvement.

Even approaching his 31st birthday though, there is no doubting Schweinsteiger’s signing is the one United fans will be most excited about.
