Love Your Club: Lee Wallace – Rangers

After the disappointment of last year, Rangers are set on making it second time lucky as they bid to make a return to the Ladbrokes Premiership as quickly as possible. One man who will be key to achieving that goal is skipper Lee Wallace.

The defender broke the 100 league appearance mark for the club last year and knows the clubbetter than most. Here he tells Ladbrokes News what makes Rangers special.

Why do you love Rangers?

I love my club because of the fans. I was well aware of them before I made my move from Hearts.

I was aware of the size of the club, the history, the quality of the players at the time but most of all the fans. I had experienced them as away supporters and ever since I’ve been here they’ve been great.

We have obviously had turbulent times at Rangers over years but they’ve stood by us, stood by the club and hopefully they can now reap the rewards. Through the hard work of the players, they can start watching the team play well so we get ourselves back to where we should be playing our football.

What’s the vibe like in the dressing room?

When you get 50 odd thousand at Ibrox the atmosphere is great. When you’re in the dressing room the focus is on that game and you know you have to perform and do yourself proud. As you make the walk down just before you come out you can hear the fans and it’s electrifying and just before you take to the field you’re really pumped up.

Young Lewis McLeod, who’s moved on to Brentford and now young Fraser Aird have done the music. It’s mainly dance music, it’s been great and everybody is fine getting ready to that. It’s decent.

Describe the fans and what they mean to the club

We’ve got fans in massive numbers. Our fans are the best and the support they’ve shown us has been unbelievable and it’s up to us to give something back. When you see them in and around the stadium you do have huge respect for them and the support they give us. Any interaction I’ve had with fans has been tremendous and I hope that can continue.

Can you name a Rangers backroom hero?

I think we have a couple and it would be unfair to name just one. Jimmy Bell the kitman and his son Martin who do a tremendous job. We go through a lot of kit. Both the physios have been first class working with a few lads who have had bad injuries and they have done great to get them back as fit as possible. Also Disco the masseur has recently come back to the club after a couple of years and it’s great to see him back.

What’s the best thing about being a Rangers footballer?

I’ve played for 10 years now and as I have got older it’s probably changed a bit. Probably having that responsibility at a club as big as ours you are a role model and there’s a bit more scrutiny. You need to be aware of what you are doing. Having that responsibility and being a role model is the biggest and best thing to take on board as a footballer.
