Growing up to captain your local stuff is the dream of most young men and Jonny Fairbairn has realised his by accepting the armband at Shielfield Park.
The Wee Gers skipper is the epitome of local lad done good and this is not lost on the defender, who is enjoying the recognition in his home town.
Here the 25-year-old tells Ladbrokes News why he loves Berwick Rangers…
Why do you love Berwick Rangers?
I love it as I’m a local player. I live 15 minutes from the stadium and grew up here and watched games as a lad. I joined a few years ago and now I’m captain it’s a dream come true.
What’s the vibe like in the dressing room?
We normally have a beat box in the dressing room. David Banjo is the designated DJ this season we so he plays the tunes and we all try to gee each other up. There’s a bit of waiting around so we try to have a bit of banter in the warm up.
Last year Devon Jacobs was always getting in trouble for pinging balls at people. I’m also known to do that. If anyone’s going for a pee or not trying in training I’ll be trying to get them. The manager hates it though.
Colin (Cameron) will come in about 45 minutes before a game and then it goes silent. He names the team, you might have an idea in training or if you’ve played and won the week before, but generally we find out just before a game.
And then it’s out onto the pitch. At Berwick you can see and hear the noisy fans as soon as you come out and the kids are waiting for high fives at the side of the tunnel, its nice but you do try to focus on the game.
Describe the fans and what they mean to the club
It’s a bit of a cliché but fans are the most important part of the club. They pay to watch and want see us do well. Players, managers and chairmen will come and go but the fans will always be there.
With Berwick being a small town an hour away from other big cities they are committed to the cause and do a lot of travelling. There’s a lot to be said for people like that and their efforts are are always appreciated in our dressing room.
I’m in and around the town a lot so I speak to a lot of fans they like to see a local guy doing well. We’ve got a few new players and they have been asking me about them. I try to make as much time as I can for the fans.
If we go out with the directors and their friends we have a good night.
