Why Jonny Evans holds the key to beefing up Man United’s defence

Manchester United defender Jonny Evans could hold the key to solving the club’s right-back problem but not by filling in for Rafael.
Red Devils boss Louis van Gaal is reportedly considering using Evans as a sweetener in order to lure Seamus Coleman away from Everton.
Van Gaal has lost faith in his current Brazilian right-back and after missing out on both Dani Alves and Nathaniel Clyne is going all out to ensure his bid for the Republic of Ireland international doesn’t fall flat.
Evans is about to enter the final 12 months of his United contract and with Chris Smalling and Phil Jones ahead of him in the pecking order, and Sergio Ramos firmly on the Red Devils’ radar, there is plenty to suggest the 27-year-old would be open to the move.
Coleman, 26, has been ever-present in the Toffee’s starting XI for the past three seasons and among the Merseyside club’s most consistent performers.
According to Transfer Markt, the former Sligo Rovers man is valued at £12.6m but with four years remaining on his Goodison Park contract United are likely to have to put together a deal worth considerably more than that.
This shouldn’t prove to be a stumbling block, however, with Van Gaal sitting on a £150m transfer kitty to boost United’s chances of winning the Premier League.
The Red Devils are currently priced at 11/2 to wrestle the top flight crown from Chelsea, but if targets like Coleman arrive the odds on a first league success in the post-Ferguson era would surely tumble.
