It’s official – Edgar Davids has the best dreads in the world of sport
Dustin Brown may be the toast of Wimbledon and everyone’s favourite dreadlocked tennis star of the moment – but the Jamaican ace has some way to go to reach Edgar Davids’ legendary status.
Call it a quiet day in the office if you will but after Brown’s demolition of 14-time Grand Slam winner Rafa Nadal at SW19 we asked you to vote for your favourite dreadlocked sports star and the Dutch midfield battler was the winner – by a country mile.
The former Ajax, AC Milan, Juventus, Barcelona, Internazionale, Tottenham, Crystal Palace and … er … Barnet man epitomised cool on the football field and this was evident in our poll, with 48 per cent of voters naming the Champions League winner their favourite.
Next in the voting and completing our top three was Seattle Seahawks star Richard Sherman. The SuperBowl winner was named NFC Defensive Player of the Year last season, but we all know it’s his controversial outburst and distinctive locks that make him memorable on this side of the pond.
Next up, with a surprisingly paltry 11 per cent was Nottingham Forest star-turned football journeyman Jason Lee.
His “pineapple” hairdo may have inspired a legendary 1990s terrace chant but it seems most people have either forgotten – or no longer care.
And last but not least we have Christian Karembeu, the World Cup-winning Frenchman, now a keen purveyor of footgolf, took his dreadlocks on a career tour that enjoyed tops at Nantes, Sampdoria, Real Madrid, Middlesbrough, Olympiacos and Bastia and while his barnet may have earned him cult status at some of those clubs is wasn’t enough to make an impression on the Ladbrokes news readers, with just seven per cent voting for the midfield maestro.
