Goodwood Stakes King of Stats: Millman and Atzeni set for glory

Published:

The clouds are beginning to lift as we head into day two at Glorious Goodwood, with the summer festival hopeful of living up to its illustrious name before the week is out.

Among the plethora of Group races on offer at the West Sussex track a high-value handicap or two can be punted on, including the 2m5f Goodwood Stakes at 14.00.

To help lead the way, we sent the King of Stats on a fact-finding mission ahead of the 20-runner contest. Here’s what he came back with:

Each of the past 13 winners have been seven years old or younger

A trend that has clearly been figured out well in advance by most trainers, but we can get rid of eight-year-old Teak at this juncture.

11 of the past 13 winners had previously won over at least 1m6f on the flat

This stat really starts to separate the wheat from the chaff, with Aramist, Boite, Pilgrims Rest, Sands Of Fortune and Bohemian Rhapsody failing to meet the criteria.

Nine of the past 13 winners were either four or five-year-olds

With no three-year-olds lining up in the day two opener, Gabrial’s Star, Mawaqeet, Wordiness and Rosairlie all take their leave here due to advancing ages. We’re halfway there…

Nine of the past 13 winners had previously won over at least 2m on the flat

Mark Prescott’s well-fancied four-year-old William Of Orange gets the shove here alongside Air Squadron, with eight now left in the mix.

Eight of the past 13 winners had previously run at Goodwood

Debutant Ridgeway Storm’s departure leaves seven standing.

Seven of the past 13 winners carried 9-0 or more to victory

It may be a marginal call, but this trend takes care of Gavlar, Arty Campbell, See And Be Seen, Number One London, Longshadow and Needless Shouting, all of whom are in the bottom half of the weights.

Only one horse comes through every round unscathed, and that’s Rod Millman’s filly Taws, the mount of Andrea Atzeni.

Get on.
