You say Christian Benteke is the man to fire Liverpool to glory

If Liverpool are to be challenging for Champions League places this season it will be the goals of Christian Benteke that gets them there, that is according to Ladbrokes’ latest poll.

With the Belgian’s move to Anfield imminent, we asked our readers who they thought would be responsible for scoring the most goals for the club in the campaign ahead.

And the result was a landslide, the club’s £32.5m man picking up a whopping 66 per cent of the vote, to blow away the other candidates.

It’s easy to see why he is seen as such a big signing for the Merseyside outfit, having fired his way to 13 goals for a struggling Aston Villa side in the season just gone.

And with an arguably stronger support unit behind him in the north west it’s hard to see him failing to get anywhere near that target once again.

The only person in with a shout of topping his tally according to our readers is Daniel Sturridge (20 per cent of the votes).

If replicating the 24 goals he bagged in 2013-14 his new strike partner will face a tough ask to match it.

But the big word there is IF. Injuries ruled the England man out of much of last season, and unless he puts his treatment table terrors behind him could find himself down the pecking order when it comes to the club’s scoring charts.

Stay fit though and he could leave another summer arrival regretting his decision.

Danny Ings would be expected to be at least third choice with everyone fit, and could find himself struggling for game-time.

That is represented by the fact that despite his 11 goals for a relegated Burnley outfit, he picked up just eight per cent of the vote.

Brendan Rodgers has stated that Mario Balotelli’s future is in his own hands, with an exit rumoured to be on the cards.

Even if he doesn’t leave he will need to do astronomically better than the pitiful four Premier League strikes he bagged in 2014-15.

Just pipping Balo to the wooden spoon was Divock Origi.

He may be more of a future prospect for the Reds, but our readers don’t believe he will have any kind of impact in the season ahead, as he picked up just two per cent of the votes.

As far as he is concerned goals look unlikely to be forthcoming, with new arrival Benteke tipped to shine at Anfield and lead the Liverpool line.

Do that, and he could be a top quality value bet to land the Premier League’s Golden Boot at 16/1.
