Chelsea legend latest to jump on the Arsenal title bandwagon

Published:

It is becoming one of the themes of the summer (other than Raheem Sterling’s antics) as Petr Cech’s move to Arsenal continues to spark title talk for the coming season.

New York City player Frank Lampard is the latest to reference the Premier League title-winning potential of Arsenal now the Gunners have secured his old teammate. .

Arsenal players past (David Seaman) and present (Aaron Ramsey), as well as Lampard’s long-time Chelsea skipper John Terry have already intimated Cech could make the difference in 2015/16 for his new club.

It’s 11 years since Arsene Wenger got his claws on the Premier League trophy, but according to Lampard, the top-four stalwarts can make the transition to title winners with Cech minding their net.

“Cech is a world-class keeper and person and I think he can help push Arsenal right into the running next season. Arsenal weren’t a million miles away over the last few seasons,” said Lampard.

“They are always challenging before falling just short but I think Cech going there, as John Terry said recently, will save them points.”

It’s true that Arsenal fans have bemoaned the lack of a world-class goalkeeper since the ‘Invincibles’ days, but as Lampard also pointed out during the same interview, even the acquisition of Cech won’t make them favourites.

Indeed Ladbrokes make Wenger’s charges the 5/1 third favourites for the top prize in England, behind both Manchester City (5/2) and holders Chelsea, who are rated at 6/5 to retain their crown.

Meanwhile, within the trophy specials offered by the bookmaker, Cech and co are as short as 1/2 to be left empty-handed come the end of 2015/16.

However, the double FA Cup winners are 6/4 to pick up any major trophy with their new man between the sticks.
