Wilshere strike voted best England goal of modern era

He may have taken 28 games to break his England duck but it was worth the wait for Arsenal man Jack Wilshere.
That is according to the latest Ladbrokes News poll, which has seen the Gunners midfielder’s second strike against Slovenia at the weekend voted the best England goal in the modern era.
We asked you to choose your favourite Three Lions goals of the last 20 or so years and despite some strong contenders Wilshere’s thunderbolt was the clear winner with 57 per cent of the votes.
Gazza turned Colin Hendry inside out before smashing a volley in and pulling off the infamous ‘dentist chair’ celebration.
The Geordie favourite may have come second in the poll but his sublime effort was only worthy of 15 per cent of the overall vote.
Completing the top three with a fine control and volley is perhaps the closest England have come to replacing Gazza – as far as natural skill goes – Joe Cole.
His long-range effort against Sweden in the 2006 World Cup left everyone in no doubt about his ability but it was still only good enough for one in ten of the Ladbrokes News votes.
And finally, bringing up the rear are David Beckham and Michael Owen. The former single-handedly dragged England to the 2002 World Cup with an unstoppable late free kick against Greece and the latter hit the headlines as a teen by making a mockery of the Argentine defence back in 1998.
Both men are rightly hailed as two of the best to wear the England shirt in recent times but with just nine per cent of the votes each it seems their goals are deemed less spectacular!
