A new venue may be just what perpetual US Open bridesmaid needs

In the world of tennis there is a solitary title that world number one Novak Djokovic craves beyond all others to complete his career Grand Slam, while in golf, the same thing applies to American superstar Phil Mickelson.
Chances are with Rafael Nadal’s monopoly on the French Open now ended, Djokovic will eventually get his heart’s desire, but for Mickelson, landing the elusive US Open crown feels like an altogether trickier task, given the odds.
However, for the man who has got so agonisingly close – he’s now finished runner-up on a record six occasions – there is renewed optimism that Lefty could finally break the hoodoo.
The US Open will be hosted at a brand new venue in 2015, so no grating memories of near misses for Mickelson, just a fresh slate at a course which should suit his game extremely well.
Chambers Bay, on Washington State’s north-west pacific coast, is a classic-style links course akin to those associated with The Open Championship rather than the normal tree-lined challenges synonymous with the second major of the year.
The 2013 Claret Jug claimant has plenty of room to find fairways and his reading of the vast, contour-laden greens is second to none in the world game.
Even more pleasing for would-be backers of the 16/1 shot is that Mickelson arrives in Washington State in really good touch too, having tied for third at the FedEx St.Jude Classic prior to the big one.
