Sherwood must continue cutting Villa’s fringe by axing these three

Published:

Heads are rolling at Aston Villa. After a season in which the relief of surviving yet another relegation battle was punctured by a chastising FA Cup Final defeat to Arsenal, Tim Sherwood has set the club’s revolving door in motion at Villa Park.

Darren Bent, Andreas Weimann, Matthew Lowton and Yacouba Sylla have already departed the club this summer with the former Tottenham boss upgrading on the former two by landing Scott Sinclair and Micah Richards on permanent deals.

If the Midlands outfit are to avoid another campaign spent scrapping with the bottom feeders though, the turnover of playing staff should not end there.

Here are three more fringe players the 10/3 relegation candidates must flog before the transfer window ceremoniously slams shut:

Nathan Baker

The 24-year-old has fallen from a first-team regular under Paul Lambert to a forgotten man for Sherwood, starting 54 games in the previous two campaigns combined and just eight this past season.

Injury played a part in his disappearance, but there is little doubt that future chances will be limited now Villa have a central-defensive core of Ciaran Clarke, Ron Vlaar and Jores Okore.

Charles N’Zogbia

If Weimann was let go after making 20 Premier League starts last term, then N’Zogbia is sure to be at risk having made one less than that and failing to find the net.

That the former Newcastle whizz kid split those starts between Lambert and Sherwood’s stints indicates that neither manager particularly rated the Frenchman highly enough to make him a fixture in their side, while Sinclair’s arrival ensures the 29-year-old will remain on the sidelines.

Philippe Senderos

With Richards reportedly assured a role at centre-back, the need for the former Arsenal man is severely diminished, especially as he was only able to back up injured club-captain Vlaar seven times in the Premier League due to fitness troubles of his own.
