Poll Result: Murray to have company in round three – just

Andy Murray, who at the time of writing is two sets up against Mikhail Kukushkin, will have some British company by the time Wimbledon reaches the third round – but not much.

That is according to the latest Ladbrokes News poll, which asked readers to vote on how many of the 10 Brits in action this year will reach that stage of the competition at SW19.

With five of those players – Brydan Klein, Kyle Edmund, Naomi Broady, Laura Robson and Johanna Konta – already watching the action from their armchairs at home there was never likely to be much love for the 4+ option.

And so it proved, with the top end of our scale receiving just 10 per cent of the votes to finish dead last.

It seems, as ever, that there are plenty of people who think Andy Murray will be left flying the flag, with 33 per cent of our voters expecting just one British representative to reach that stage.

However, the biggest selection of voters expect the Dunblane man to have company, with 35 per cent of the voters feeling there will be two Brits reaching the latter stages of week one.

Should Murray prevail against Kukushkin he will be joined in round two by Heather Watson and Liam Broady, who saw off Carolina Garcia and Marinko Matosevic respectively, while James Ward and Aljaz Bedene play their first round matches later today.

Ward, who would have faced David Ferrer but for the Spaniard’s withdrawal, is 8/15 favourite to beat Luca Vanni, while Slovenian-born Bedene could get his Union Jack career off to a flying start against a faltering Radek Stepanek.
