Poll: Can US Open winner Jordan Spieth become the best ever?

Jordan Spieth added his name to the golf history book last night by adding the US Open title to The Masters trophy he picked up earlier this year.

The 21-year-old is now the youngest player to ever win both events in the same year and remains on course to complete an historic grand slam.

Given his tender age the American could go on to beat all manger of records throughout his career and today we are asking just how many majors the talented Texan can go on to win.

With two majors already on his resume Spieth has drawn level with the likes of Bernhard Langer, Jose Maria Olazabal and John Daly and Sandy Lyle.

Should the youngster prove to be a flash in the pan he is already in illustrious company but with his eyes now firmly set on The Open a third major could well be on the cards as early as next month.

At his current rate Spieth could reach this bracket before the end of 2016 to be talked about in the same breath as the great Arnold Palmer, a winner of seven career majors and Tom Watson, who landed five Open titles on route to a career haul of eight majors.

Spieth will do well to equal the latter’s haul in the UK but even if he does struggle at St Andrews a few PGA wins – the only major not won by Watson – could see him drawl level with the 65-year-old.

Few men have ever reached double figures and two who have come the closest but ultimately failed are South African legend Gary Player and 1950s American hero Ben Hogen.

Both men accumulated nine major titles throughout their careers but with Player waiting six years for his first major and Hogen waiting 16 there is plenty to suggest Spieth can overtake both men and boost the number of double-digit winners to four.

To reach this level Spieth will have to emulate two former greats of the game.
Firstly New Yorker Walter Hagen who reigned supreme from 1914 to 1929, amassing 11 major titles.

However, with the early hero never claiming a Masters title, Spieth may feel he already has an edge.

Next up is Tiger Woods and while the 14-time major winner may resent being referred to as a “former” anything his golf at the US Open last weekend says otherwise.

If Spieth can reach 15 he will eclipse Tiger and reach second on the all time list ( assuming Rory Milroy and others aren’t also on the rise) but from there is still plenty of work to do to become number one.

With 18 majors between 1962 and 1986 the undisputed king of golf remains The Golden Bear, Jack Nickalus.

Can Spieth eclipse the main man? Odds of 10/1 suggest he is certianly on the right track.
