Poll: Is Jack Wilshere’s goal up there with England’s best ever?

You have to hand it England, while they made it tough for themselves, they did deliver an entertaining match en route to victory against Slovenia.

The highlight of that victory was undoubtedly the second goal, with a fantastic England counter finished off with aplomb by Jack Wilshere.

England striking legend Gary Lineker described the strike as in the top 10 of Three Lions goals of all time, but where do you rank it?

Jack Wilshere v Slovenia (June 2015)

From the speed of the break, to Adam Lallana’s sublime back-heel right up to Wilshere’s piledriver of a finish, England’s second on Sunday was a thing of beauty.

And to think the Arsenal man hadn’t scored a goal for his country before his brace in Zilina…

Joe Cole v Sweden (June 2006)

The World Cup in 2006 may have ended, as it so often does in penalty disappointment for England, but Joe Cole provided a moment of wonder in the group stage.

With the Three Lions already qualified, the game against Sweden was somewhat of a dead rubber, but that didn’t stop Cole producing this piece of magic.

David Beckham v Greece (October 2001)

The Telegraph probably described it best with their headline of “Brilliant Beckham averts Greek tragedy”, as the then-Manchester United man rescued England.

With the Three Lions staring down the barrel of having to navigate a tricky play-off against Ukraine to qualify for the World Cup in 2002, the nation held its breath as Beckham stepped up for a free-kick, well in his range.

Michael Owen v Argentina (June 1998)

David Beckham’s red card may have taken the column inches at the time, but an 18-year-old Michael Owen’s goal sticks in the memory.

Taking the ball down with the outside of his foot, halfway in the Argentina half, the youngster weaved his way through the opposing defence, leaving world class pros looking like amateurs, before putting a delightful finish past Carlos Roa.

 Paul Gascoigne v Scotland (June 1996)

For many ‘90s kids’ Gazza’s goal against Scotland will be the goal of their childhood.

With the country enjoying hosting a major international tournament for the first time in 30 years, a goal against the Scots was always going to get the English excited.

Though we hadn’t envisaged one as special as this, and it came with a celebration equally as memorable.
