Odds say Vidal’s Arsenal move not as dead as Wenger suggests

Published:

Arsene Wenger may insist that he is not interested in bringing Arturo Vidal to Arsenal this summer, but that hasn’t stopped the Gunners remaining at the head of the queue to sign the Chilean, according to the latest betting at least.

The London side remain 7/4 favourites to be Vidal’s next destination, with interest from all around Europe being reported.

Speaking to press after Arsenal’s FA Cup victory parade, Wenger was forthright in his answer regarding any interest in the player:

“We have good midfielders and at the moment we are not looking at Arturo Vidal,” the Frenchman said.

Whether that was a genuine indication of their true intentions, or simply a tool to ensure they are not forced into a bidding war for the Juventus man remains to be seen.

He was however; very clear that if the right player came along, he would be happy to splash the cash this summer.

“Don’t rule anything out and I will not tell you as well how much money we will spend. But I’m always more focused on quality.

“I am not against spending money. I have shown that recently,” he went on to say.

The presence of Vidal’s agent at the FA Cup final sent the tabloids into overdrive, with Wenger’s admiration for the player not such a secret.

One thing that does look to pour doubt on any move (other than Wenger’s denial of interest), is the sheer number of central midfielders the Emirates outfit already possess.

Santi Cazorla, Mikel Arteta, Jack Wilshere, Mathieu Flamini, Aaron Ramsay and Francis Coquelin would all be competing for space with Vidal, should he move to north London.

His arrival would likely see him start somewhere near the top of the pecking order, but it could mean an exit for one or more of the current squad.
